Greg, I'm using a JT 30 when not playing my Heumann wood mic. The seller believed the mic and original MC151 crystal are about 25 years old. I'm babying the mic somewhat but was wondering if needed one day is a replacement Shure element basically a drop in or is there more to it than that?

A word of advice on ancient crystal elements. I'm not a frequent tight cupper, but use the technique some. Not too long ago while tight cupping a I draw chord, I sucked the life out of a great sounding R7. Possible that it was ready to go anyway, but I am being more gentle with my crystal elements now. All of my really great sounding crystals except one in a Kevin's "crytal balls" are ancient 40's and 50's elements, I'm hoping to keep at least a couple alive.

@Smoke: To fit a Shure CM or CR you'll need a different gasket, which you can get from http://www.harpmicgasktets.com

It doesn't sound like it, but if your JT30 had a built in volume control, then the value of the pot should ideally be changed as well.

@JD: Ahhhh! I feel your pain. I have done this! A really tight cup puts HUGE pressures on the diaphragm of a microphone - well beyond anything they were designed for. A new crystal might have handled the strain but it can kill an old one. It has happened to me too.
