Ok, this is driving me nuts. I'm trying David Barrett's advice on moving the tongue back into the bend, rather than forward, but I just can't get it. Any advice?

Set your front teeth about 1/4 inch apart. Imagine tip of your tongue is super glued to the back of your bottom front teeth.

If you push your tongue forward, it will arc up. Now, if you say Ssssss, make that spot on the roof of your mouth where you feel the air stream a "target spot", so you can recreate this configuration easily.

Now, exhale into hole 10, keeping the above (so called) embouchure, but allow your tongue to relax down.

This is 10 hole unbent.

By raising the tongue with your "target spot" in mind and the tip still super glued to your bottom front teeth, you may find where the bend lives.

By experimenting with your tongue placement - making small adjustments forward and back -, you may be able to discover your "sweet spot" of tongue position that controls the bend.

It feels to me to be finesse, and not force.

Of course, you should be relaxed and breathing from the diaphragm.

I should note that I can hit the whole step bend without a problem. Its the half step that's driving me nuts.

I'd suggest working first on slowly releasing from the full-step bend up to the unbent note. When you can control that you can find the half-step bend.

I had this difficulty too. The half step bend on the 10 hole is finicky and takes great precision. Try bending down the whole step, then let it back UP to find (and get in touch with) that half step bend.

Oh wait - Mr So&so just said that! Oh well - I typed it, might as well post it.

Philosophy - you can still rework that bend in all its glory by trying out my suggestion...might be a different approach than Barrett's, but it works very well.

Thanks Iceman. It just looked to me like you were coaching how to get a blow bend. My mistake.

it is also easier on some harps than others... use a lower harp and it has to do with gapping.. so find one that it is the easiest on and work on it there.. and the more difficult ones will come along.

To find it get the low harmonica (G or below), better customized and pratice. Anyway playing this note precise in tune is very tricky, I never use it when playing melodies.
