I saw Gil many times growing up and played a song with him once: "Winter in America".....I adored the guy so it was hard to see how transmogrified he was by drugs (Ironic too given his musical statements. e.g., "The Bottle", "Angel Dust"). d ---------- Facebook

I think his warnings against drugs came out of attraction to them. His personal life was turbulent and when became older he often said that he preferred being high and alone to interaction with others. Interesting that he said jail was a peaceful time for him too. Didnt need to worry about supporting himself and had time to read and write all day.
It is sad that his relationship with Brian Jackson was destroyed by his drug use. they were great together and I feel fortunate to have seen that band
