Agreed paulbunyn. Main reason I don't post any of my bands videos is because of the nature of the content. It is a direct no no according to the forum creed. But I will tell you this. The folks at my church love what blues style harp brings to the table. When my band plays out we get a lot of complements on our sound. We do mostly contemporary with a few traditional hymns and a half dozen originals to boot.

I have an inkling that there are more than a few here that play in church or at open air church like functions.

I'm not sure that posting gospel harmonica songs or discussing gospel harmonica as a style violates the forum creed. There have been threads that discuss such things before, including songs by the Rev. Dan Smith. Discussing religion, however, is prohibited.

Todd & others...I have some demo tracks we cut last year. I'll try to figure out how to get them here on the forum. I have tried in the past to post vids, but for whatever reason I have a hard time figuring it out.

Maybe I have been splitting hairs, but in the interest of being a good citizen here, I figured I would error in the side of caution.

Edited for spelling error.

For those that are interested, Keith Mitchell hosts a once a month Gospel Google Hangout.

Last week, the featured guest was Todd Parrott.

Each month we pick a song for the next meeting and then play our version of it. Pretty cool.. stuff.. ...

I started another thread with our demo tracks. But here's one of them. Our band leader Josh composed and arranged this. When we cut this last year, it was only the 2nd or 3rd time we played it together. This was the 4th and final take the night we did this.

Well i am an Atheist but i have no problem with people posting religious songs at all.
Go for it imo.
But i agree with the dictate that we don't discuss religion..and as long as the tunes have Harp(Ha) in them all is good in the quantum world

Glad to hear that there are others on MBH that are using the harp to celebrate their faith. My stage experience playing the harp stems mostly from playing in the praise team band at church, singing and playing in a gospel quartet and just recently I was invited to join a Christian Rock Group called Rivers Crossing. My first show with them is coming up on December 21st. We do 90% original music and a few standards. So far I'm having a blast and it will only get better.

Those interested in Gospel should check out bluegrass jams as there is loads of gospel in bluegrass. I go to a regular jam & there are musicians there of different or no faiths but we all play, sing and have a great time....but no discussion of religion even though the meet is held on a church property. Musically, through the centuries, the world would have missed out on some of the greatest music ever written were it not for gospel & religious music. You don't have to believe it to love it. I love Country Music but don't ride a horse or live on a farm.

@Gaj7- I Really like your posted tunes. What harp are you playing on Be Thou My Vision?

On BE THOUGH MY VISION, I'm using an octave harp. Specifically, a Hohner Auto Valve that I re-tuned to Melody Maker Tuning. I think it is a (G) harp.

I really like octave harps. I have more information on them on my web site, but they are a great and simple way to get some interesting flavor into playing. I was shooting for an Irish slant on this tune.

I have a regular gig at a megachurch. The stage, sound system, support staff are pro level, as is the musicianship.

It is as good or better than many concert venues I've played secular music in. Consider this no matter what religious inclinations you have.

B/t/w, 2chops Soulmanna sounds very cool.

Some tasteful harping there.

Your lead singer has a Third Day kind of thing going. His voice would come alive with some doubling and compression.

From a musical point of view, I recommend that every harp player should find some gospel or gospel-blues tunes that they like and give them a try. It's a great way to get a feel for the connection between gospel and blues, thematically, and also between minor and major pentatonic scales... which leads you into country music as well.

My favourite gospel blues artist is Blind Willie Johnson. Almost all his songs are very harp friendly. Also, Mississippi Fred McDowell and Paul Oscher cover some fine old gospel tunes. Obviously there is a deep tradition of crossover (and tension) between gospel and blues.

Edit: If you are not of religious bent, many old traditional gospel tunes were turned into Civil Rights Movement anthems. E.g. "I Woke Up This Morning (With My Mind on Freedom)" with new lyrics by Pete Seeger.

The bass player I work with plays in a church band at one of those megachurches. He regularly plays in front of a couple thousand people.

I'm not religious myself, but I've sung a fair amount of the old Sacred Harp/Shape Note stuff, as well as the classics like Handel. I've always enjoyed it.

@DoubleJ; Thanks for the kudos. Josh has been told that he sounds like the lead singer from Third Day. He can put a bit of growl on the vocals when he wants. So far we have a half a dozen or so originals that we do. We've been tossing around the idea of making a CD. Our origninals plus a few of our signature covers that we've put our fingerprint on. We really don't practice but maybe 2 or 3 times a year. Like when ever we have a new tune that has a different sort of arrangement that we don't want to just wing it on stage for its debut. We've played together often enough, and we all pay attention to each other when gigging that it really isn't needed at this point. Besides, our jobs and family life has a very high priority for us. We have no delusions of fame or fortune.

@Iceman; You're right about the Newsboys. There song "Hallelujah He Reins" is even better with some comping and fills. I'm hoping to get that one added to our set list.

Here's an example of what I consider gospel as a style of music. I played on this around 2008, and I'm pretty sure they copied and pasted licks here and there, which is pretty common nowadays. There's not a lot of harp, but this is pretty typical of what often happens in a session.

P.S. I have no affiliation with any of these artists, I'm simply hired to play on their tunes.

I was thinking of doing some tunes for my Amish friends.
The harmonica is the one instrument they allow.
When I researched their gospel music I found that it
came from Ausbund but it has no music just words and
is passed down by word of mouth. I think the same is
true for another version the anabapstist hymns.

I was wondering if anyone knows of versions that have
musical notation.

We give the devil the blues every Saturday and Sunday at Riversong Worship Center in rural Ohio. The Pastor owns a music store and recording studio, so we are well equipped and lots of original rock/blues style music. I play through a 1952 Masco tube amp, using a Greg Huemann custom chrome bullet mic, while sending everything through 4 of Randy's lone wolf harp pedals.

@timeistight - whoa, that Elder Roma Wilson got me fired up! That was choice.

@harpsquealer - Yup, Buddy Green, the late Terry McMillan, Todd Parrot... be sure to add Darryl Mansfield to that list if you want some great gospel blues. TJ Klay is another monster harp player that incorporates a lot of gospel music.

Back in the 80's and early 90's when I lived in Nashville, I was an occasional bottom-tier session player and most of the stuff I did was on "custom" (not major label) gospel albums. Some of it was kind of painful but most of it was really enjoyable to play on. People who, for the most part, wanted their music to do something good. I did get to play about a dozen notes on this guy's album:

Super simple but that's what the producer wanted. (And about all I'm good at anyway ;^)

I used to play in church until the elders gave me an ultimatum, " You can play in bars or you can play in church but your not going to do both here" So I only play in bars now : ^ (
I did get a grin later though, I was ask to play, and did, at a funeral for one of the members who thought I was done wrong. I guess he got the last laugh .
