Where have you heard sixteenth notes used to good effect in songs?
I've been practicing scale runs over the past several months. Major and minor pentatonic in various forms, using triplets, eighths and sixteenth notes. I come up with some sort of pattern based upon backtracking or leapfrogging the scale. I use a metronome while learning the pattern, then try to apply it in jam tracks.
I'm good with the eighth notes and the triplets, but I can't get the feel of 16th notes. When it gets that fast, I even struggle recognizing it as 16th notes.
Does anyone have good examples of 16th notes used in a song? ---------- Marc Graci YouTube Channel
Sixteenth notes tend to be used sparingly in blues, but are all over jazz, funk, and classical.
One thing to remember is that you can swing 16th notes just like you can swing 8th notes. One example of swung 16ths is in the intro to Little Walter's "Can't Hold on Much Longer, where he leads up to Draw 5 with triplets, then uses a series of 16th notes:
Triplets: 2D, 3D 4B 4D
16ths: 5D 6B 6B 6B, 6B 5D 4D 4B
Triplets: 3D - 2D, 3D 4B 4D
(repeat)
Sixteenths tend to sound more natural dividing a slower beat, at least in blues and ballads.
But for some uptempo 16ths, listen to Little Walter's intro to "Mellow Down Easy" =========== Winslow
Thanks, Winslow. I've tried using 16th's over a slow blues, but a lot of slow blues has a very strong triplet rhythm and the two don't gel very well. ---------- Marc Graci YouTube Channel
