Thought I would show off my chopped Spher-O-Dyne mic and my self-made volume control. The volume unit is hand made from aluminium with switchcraft fittings and a 9mm, 100k pot.

Nice work.
How does it feel/ sound now?
Was there not enough space to mount the VC in the body? Or was there another reason for making it external.

Looks good! That VC design looks very familiar, but i suppose thats an indication of the practicality of Greg’s design

Thanks guys! It was a bit tight inside the mic for the vol pot. There is a transformer in there as well. Won’t often need the volume pot and it does alter the tone a bit so I wanted it as an option for as many of my mics as possible.

The bit I took off the mic weighed 50 grams so it does reduce that lower end leverage effect a fair bit.

Yeah, Greg’s was the obvious inspiration. This volume control design certainly is about as efficient as it can be for “off the shelf” parts. I have no machining tools so it had to be practical. For me it was also cost efficient but it wasn’t super-easy. For anyone with little ambition I would deffo suggest getting one of Greg’s to save a lot of headache and skinned knuckles!

I built one a few years ago out of a chrome guitar slide that was a perfect fit for the switchcraft connectors. It was fitting the V/Pot that was difficult.(I didn't want to use a Mini Pot)

I hear you! I went for a mini-pot for that reason. The tube is only 23mm od. Without a lathe it really is a lesson in hunting and gathering parts!
