GREAT LANTHUS!!.... Glad you bought one of Adams lessons. People are often reluctant to spend money, especially with youtube having so much info for free. But Adams tradebit lessons are worth their weight in gold. It only takes one lesson to show you how good they are.

As for Jon Gindicks Lick ... glad you like it. That was a HUGE one for me. Just use the 3 & 4 blow and draw and mess around with timing and different note combinations. It was a total lightbulb for me.

If you want more licks. Ronnie shellist has lick lessons for download on harmonica123.com. they are great. Maybe a bit ahead of where you are at though. But just keep in mind.

I have no one where i love to talk to about harp either. This forum has been amazing.

3 months is tough. That was a pretty hairy patch for me. But it feels good as you learn new stuff. Just stick with it and record yourself. That way you can go back n listen and see how much progress your making. The beginning can be disheartening. Shoot im in a bit of a rut right now, lol. So you never get to a point where things are just care free, but i guess you know that because of guitar. This is my first real attempt at mastering an instrument. You get ups and downs just like anything else. But aslong as your learning your progressing.

But your in Good company. Keep at it.

Nice one Lanthus. It's understandable that posting your stuff is a bit of a hurdle, hopefully we can make it a routine thing. That's the point - many of us don't have harp players to compare notes with nearby.

And that's good playing, that rendition of Danny Boy is solid. Where are you at with bending at the moment? I guess that's the defining technique for blues harp.

Yea. Thats another thing. It took some stones to post your playing at 3 months. I just did my first post, what .. a month ago? ... good stuff.

I second MTGs thoughts to make it more of a regular thing to post our progress. Constructive criticism from other harmonica players is super helpful. Thats how we can all progress faster.

Bending ... i heard a little bit of bending going on in there. But yea after single notes, is on to the dreaded bending ... duh duh duuunnnnnn. No its not that bad. And you seem to have atleast the feeling for the 4 draw bend already. Thats step one. Atleast was for me. I figured it out messing around with the gindick riff. Adding expression to it. Until i started adding in the bent 4 and didn't even know it.

Dang it, just three months? You already sound better than I do after more than a year! You just made the 'Envy List'... ;)

My guess is your breathing skills as a singer have definitely paid off, giving you a great advantage for playing the harmonica.

Thanks for sharing your samples. I've found that once you bite that bullet, it gets successively easier and you'll benefit more with each sample you post.

Keep up the good work!

lucky for you, you will still be able to play guitar when you regain your senses and realise how silly harmonica is...

Adam has not one but TWO mojo lessons, one simplified and one less so http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com/blues_harp_lessons.html

The only thing is that they are oriented around a different groove than you have there. More like the Muddy Waters version, if you know that, faster and lighter.

How about this kind of thing for your groove, the first track. That's Good Rockin' Charles. The first solo is a classic kind of thing involving mostly holes 2, 3, 4. A real meat-and-potatoes solo. Involves some bent notes, but I remember you were ok with those.

...but if there are two guitar solos, a bass solo and now you are getting a solo - isn't the drummer going to want a solo too :)

Yes. The second lesson of mojo is no joke! It comes with How to play Kim Wilson's Mojo solo on Ludella.

But yea. ...try the mojo 1.0 lesson. And you'll get there.

Another suggestion would be to download a few versions of mojo. Listen to them a d get a feel for what others have played in the track.

You're welcome Lanthus. Nice to have good friends to play with, it cuts out a lot of problems. Let's have that harp and drum solo!

(I've moved some stuff about that riff to the other thread, coz it was getting out of hand).

Ta! But on reflection, it's quite a tricky solo. I hadn't realised that until I unpicked it. Although I like it, maybe it's not the best recommendation.

However...

Listing to more Good Rockin Charles today, I heard "I'm going home..." If you can find it, it's not on YT. He serves up another classic solo, based on double stops on (45) and (34) draw/blow.

That'll give you lots of oomph for little effort! Here is my 'learning copy', played lightly. Similar tempo to your song although a different key. If you play this on the D-harp and drag those double stops it should sound big.

Again, it's not classic 'mojo groove' but it fits what you are playing there.
